San Francisco
Lots of older homes in SF have small electrical panels. Upgrading them for a heat pump can cost more than the heater itself. The good news: a 120V plug-in heat pump usually fits and skips the panel work. Closet-mounted heaters in old Victorians and condos often qualify for a tight-space exemption or work better with a gas zero-NOx tankless.
Oakland
Oakland has a wide mix of homes — old Craftsmans, modern townhouses, everything in between. Newer homes usually have the panel needed for a 240V heat pump. Older bungalows with detached garages are great fits because the heat pump can live in the garage with plenty of air space.
San Jose
Most San Jose homes have modern panels and detached garage water heaters — a great fit for 240V heat pumps. SVCE has some of the most generous electrification rebates in the Bay Area, and they often stack with BayREN.
San Rafael
San Rafael has a lot of mid-century homes. Pre-1970 homes often need panel upgrades for a 240V heat pump. The 120V plug-in is increasingly relevant here. MCE customers may qualify for extra rebates beyond the $1,000 from BayREN.
